Walinga on the Olympics
School of Communication and Culture Director and Prof. Jennifer Walinga was interviewed by Pamela McCall on CFAX 1070 about her experience with the Canadian Women’s Rowing Team in the 1988 and 1992 Olympics.
Here is an excerpt:
“From ’88 to ‘92 we introduced new training principles based on our strengths as crews as Canadians,” says Walinga. “We were facing a lot of challenge, as you can see with steroid use across the world many of the countries we were competing against it was obviously rampant, so how do you compete against that? And we introduced training three times a day which was kind of unheard of. We introduced the gold medal standard which was a high ideal we were all aspiring to in terms of our speed. And over those four years, we started to really see the results pan out.”
